NEW DELHI: On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Justice D.Y. Chandrachud on becoming India's Chief Justice (CJI).

On Wednesday, President Droupadi Murmu gave Justice Chandrachud the oath of office necessary to become the 50th Chief Justice of India.
Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Law Minister Kiren Rijiju, former Chief Justice of India U.U. Lalit, Supreme Court judges, and other dignitaries were present when Justice Chandrachud took the oath at the Rashtrapati Bhavan ceremony.
Chandrachud will preside over the Supreme Court from November 10, 2024, for a period of two years.
Justice Chandrachud, who refers to dissent as the "safety valve of democracy," served on multiple Constitution benches and contributed to important rulings by the Supreme Court, including ones on the Ayodhya land dispute and the right to privacy.
He was also a member of the benches that issued ground-breaking rulings on the legality of the Aadhaar programme, the Sabarimala controversy, and the decriminalisation of same-sex relationships after largely overturning Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code.
He recently oversaw the expansion of the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act's application to unmarried women seeking abortions between 20 and 24 weeks of pregnancy.
The harsh second wave of the pandemic last year was referred to be a "national crisis" by a bench he was in charge of, and it had also passed various directives to ease people's suffering during the COVID-19 disaster.
