Itanagar: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is reaching Arunachal Pradesh today, November 19. to inaugurate the state’s first greenfield airport near Itanagar.

"The Prime Minister will dedicate the 600 MW Kameng Hydro Power Station to the Nation and inaugurate the newly-built Donyi Polo Airport, Itanagar."

The airport's name honours Arunachal Pradesh's long-standing indigenous veneration of the Sun (known as "Donyi") and the Moon (known as "Polo") as well as the state's rich culture and cultural legacy.

On February 9, 2019, Modi presided over the laying of the airport's foundation stone.

The airport, which was built by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) over a 694-acre plot of land in Hollongi at a cost of Rs 645 crore, is suited for flying Airbus-320 aircraft and has eight check-in desks that can seat 300 passengers at peak times.
It is the first greenfield airport in Arunachal and has a 2,300-meter runway that can accommodate Boeing 747 takeoffs and landings. According to the AAI, the airport would have all contemporary passenger amenities.

According to official sources, the airport terminal is a contemporary structure that encourages resource recycling, renewable energy, and energy efficiency.

The construction of a new airport in Itanagar will help the region's economic development by enhancing connectivity and serving as a stimulus for the expansion of trade and tourism.

"Donyi Polo Airport would significantly increase trade and tourism by offering seamless connection throughout the nation and enhancing ease of access to Itanagar. The state's economy would be catalysed, said the chief minister Pema Khandu.

During the programme, the PM will also virtually dedicate the 600 MW Kameng Hydro Power Station to the Nation.
The project, which was built in the West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh at a cost of more than Rs 8,450 crore and over an area of more than 80 km, will create a power surplus for the state while simultaneously enhancing the integration and stability of the national grid.
