Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his entire Cabinet tendered their resignations to President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday, a day after the Lok Sabha election results were declared, according to an official statement from Rashtrapati Bhavan.
President Murmu has accepted PM Modi's resignation and requested him to continue until the new government assumes office, the statement added.
PM Modi chaired the final cabinet meeting of the 17th Lok Sabha earlier in the day to review the election results and discuss the formation of the new government after the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured a majority of seats in the house.
The cabinet also recommended the dissolution of the current Lok Sabha, whose term ends on June 16.
In the recently concluded elections, the BJP alone secured 240 seats, while the NDA obtained a clear majority in the 543-member house. The principal opposition party, Congress, secured 99 seats.
