New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the opening ceremony of the year-long joint festivities of the 90th anniversary of the Sivagiri pilgrimage and the golden jubilee of Brahma Vidhyalaya, which will take place in New Delhi, today.
The logo for the combined celebrations will also be unveiled by the Prime Minister. Both the Sivagiri pilgrimage and the Brahma Vidhyalaya were founded with the blessing and supervision of Shri Narayana Guru, a famous social reformer.
Every year, from December 30 to January 1, the Sivagiri pilgrimage takes place in Sivagiri, Thiruvananthapuram.
"The aim of the pilgrimage, according to Narayana Guru, should be to create comprehensive knowledge among the people, and the trip should aid in their general development and prosperity. The pilgrimage concentrates on eight topics viz. education, cleanliness, piety, handicrafts, trade and commerce, agriculture, science and technology, and organised effort "said to the Prime Minister's Office (PMO).
The pilgrimage began in 1933 with a small group of devotees and has since grown to become one of the most important festivals in south India. Thousands of devotees come from all over the world to Sivagiri to participate in the annual pilgrimage.
"Narayana Guru also envisioned a place where all religions' precepts could be taught with harmony and tolerance. This ambition was realised with the establishment of the Sivagiri Brahma Vidyalayam. Brahma Vidyalaya offers a seven-year education in Indian philosophy, which includes Narayana Guru's teachings as well as scriptures from all major religions around the world "According to the PMO.
