New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is all set to inaugurate the highly anticipated third edition of the Global Maritime India Summit (GMIS) 2023 on Tuesday, gracing the occasion through video conferencing. Running from October 17th to 19th at Mumbai's MMRDA grounds, this three-day extravaganza is orchestrated by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways and will introduce the ambitious Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, a comprehensive strategy to elevate India's maritime economy to new heights.

The Summit's Core Focus: The Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways has charted a visionary course for the future, emphasizing a range of initiatives to enhance port infrastructure, promote sustainability, and foster international cooperation.

Key Topics Under Discussion: Over the course of this extensive summit, an assembly of distinguished global figures will convene to deliberate and make strategic decisions on numerous critical maritime issues. These encompass topics like decarbonization, coastal shipping, inland water transportation, the future of ports, ship repair and recycling, shipbuilding, financial services, insurance and arbitration, technological innovation, maritime clusters, safety and security, as well as maritime tourism.

Fostering Maritime Partnerships

The event is poised to be a significant milestone in the maritime sector, with over 300 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) worth more than Rs 7 lakh crore slated for signing during the summit. Ministerial delegates from across the globe representing Asia (encompassing Central Asia, the Middle East, and the BIMSTEC region), Africa, South America, and Europe will join this prestigious gathering.

Furthermore, the summit will play host to CEOs, investors, business leaders, officials, and various stakeholders hailing from different corners of the world. A remarkable turnout is expected, with 16 state ministers and Lieutenant Governors from 11 Indian States and Union Territories adding to the event's significance.

A Watershed Moment for India's Maritime Sector: GMIS 2023 is poised to be a game-changer for India's maritime sector, providing an outstanding platform for investments in the country's maritime domain. It builds upon the foundation laid by the first edition of this monumental event in Mumbai in 2016, followed by a virtual gathering in 2021.

Unveiling Projects of National Importance: On a parallel front, the Prime Minister is scheduled to inaugurate, dedicate to the nation, and lay the foundation stone for an array of projects worth over Rs 23,000 crore. These initiatives are meticulously aligned with India's forward-looking blueprint for maritime development and economic growth.

Among these, the Prime Minister will lay the foundation stone for the Tuna Tekra all-weather deep draft terminal. This state-of-the-art greenfield terminal, planned to be developed with an investment exceeding Rs 4,500 crore at the Deendayal Port Authority in Gujarat, will be furnished under a public-private partnership (PPP) framework.
