LUCKNOW: On January 2, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone for Meerut's Major Dhyan Chand Sports University. Yogi Adityanath, the state's chief minister, has declared the establishment of the university to encourage sports in the state.
"The Major Dhyan Chand Sports University would be a milestone in enabling the youth to give exceptional performances on national and worldwide levels," a government spokesman said. Here, students will receive training in a variety of sports, as well as a degree depending on their success in national and international contests. The university will provide a BA in sports as well as diploma, certificate, postgraduate, M.Phil, and Ph.D degrees. It will be able to accommodate 540 male and female hopefuls." The institution will be built on 91 acres of land. An indoor stadium, skating rink, synthetic hockey field, Olympic-sized swimming pool, football field, volleyball court, basketball court, handball, kabaddi grounds, tennis court, gymnasium, and multi-purpose hall will be included.
According to the spokeswoman, the chief minister has requested the home department to develop a policy that will allow sportspeople to work in the police department. Diet money for athletes has also been enhanced from Rs 250 to Rs 375 per month. Instructions have been given to select 50 international level coaches for various games, with 266 open positions in the sports department to be filled as soon as possible.
