Prime Minister Narendra Modi will not deliver his address at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) this month as originally planned. According to a revised list of speakers released by the UN, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will now represent India and speak at the General Debate on September 28.
Initially, PM Modi was scheduled to address the high-level debate on September 26. However, the latest update from the UN indicates that the level of India's representation has changed, resulting in Jaishankar taking on this role.
Although PM Modi will not address the General Debate, he is expected to attend other important events during his visit to the U.S. He will participate in a major community event on September 22 in Long Island, New York, at a venue that holds 16,000 people. In addition, he is set to attend the "Summit of the Future" at the UN on September 22 and 23.
The 79th session of the UNGA General Debate will be held from September 24 to 30. As is tradition, Brazil will be the first country to speak, followed by the U.S., where President Joe Biden will deliver his final address before the upcoming presidential elections in November.
PM Modi, who was sworn in for a third term as India's Prime Minister in June, last addressed the UNGA in September 2021. In June 2023, he led the International Yoga Day celebrations at the UN headquarters before embarking on an official visit to Washington, D.C.
