Jorhat: Prime Minister Narendra Modi revealed a grand 125-foot bronze statue honoring 'Ahom general' Lachit Borphukan in Assam's Jorhat. This monumental 'Statue of Valour' was unveiled by the PM at the Lachit Barphukan Maidam Development Project in Hollongapar near Teok.
Arriving in Jorhat from Arunachal Pradesh via helicopter, Modi adorned traditional attire and headgear for the occasion. He took part in an Ahom ritual as part of the statue's unveiling ceremony. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma accompanied the Prime Minister during the event.
Crafted by renowned sculptor Ram Vanji Sutar, the statue stands 84 feet tall with an additional 41 feet pedestal, reaching a towering height of 125 feet. The foundation stone for this statue was laid by former President Ram Nath Kovind back in February 2022.
Lachit Borphukan, a celebrated military commander of the Ahom kingdom (1228-1826), is remembered for his pivotal role in the historic 1671 'Battle of Saraighat.' This battle marked a significant victory as it thwarted the prolonged efforts of the powerful Mughal forces, led by Raja Ramsingh-I, to recapture Assam.
