New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the 'Kartavyapath' at India Gate at 7 pm on Thursday (September 7). A statue of the great freedom fighter Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose will also be unveiled on the same day. According to a statement from the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), the purpose of naming Rajpath as Kartavyapath is to set an example by removing the symbol of power and naming its public ownership and empowerment.
Issuing a statement on Wednesday, the PMO said, 'PM Modi will also unveil the statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose at India Gate on this occasion. This step is in line with PM Modi's second Panch Prana for a new India in the Amrit period - removing the traces of the colonial mindset. Over the years, Rajpath and the surrounding areas of Central Vista Avenue were witnessing increased visitor traffic, which has also put pressure on its infrastructure.'
According to the PMO, it lacks basic amenities like public toilets, drinking water, street furniture and adequate parking space. Along with this, there was inadequate signage, poor maintenance of water features and disorderly parking. In addition, a need was felt to organize the Republic Day Parade and other national events in a less disruptive manner with minimal restrictions on public movement. Making the Rajpath as a Kartavyapath has been done keeping in mind all the concerns including redevelopment while ensuring the integrity and continuity of the architecture.
