New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said "urban Naxals" and "anti-development elements" with political support stalled the construction of the Sardar Sarovar Dam on the Narmada river in Gujarat for several years. PM Modi said that all this was done in the name of the environment. He also said that the work which was started by the country's first PM Jawaharlal Nehru, he (Modi) completed it. Let me tell you that PM Modi was addressing the conference of Environment Ministers held in Gujarat through video conferencing.

PM Modi told the environment ministers of different states of the country gathered in Ekta Nagar of Narmada district how efforts were made to stop the development works in the country under the guise of the environment. He said, 'Without modern infrastructure, the development of the country, efforts to improve the standard of living of the countrymen cannot be successful. But we have seen how the construction of modern infrastructure in the country was complicated in the name of environmental clearance.'

He said, 'The place where you are sitting, the example of Ekta Nagar is a sight opener. How the Urban Naxals, the development opponents had stopped the work of Sardar Sarovar Dam. You must have seen the big reservoir here. Its foundation stone was laid soon after independence. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel played an important role in this and Pandit Nehru laid the foundation stone. But, all the Urban Naxalites came into the field. Falsely propagated and campaigned that this work is anti-environmental. Was constantly stopped. The work which was started by Nehru ji was completed after I came. How much money of the country was wasted in all these things.'
