New Delhi: PM Narendra Modi on Thursday attended the Centenary Programme of Visva Bharati University. Addressing the event through video conferencing, he said Vishva Bharati is a true embodiment of Gurudev's thinking, philosophy and diligence for India. In his address, PM Modi provided interesting information about the women's start of wearing 'Ulta Pallu' sarees.
PM Modi said, "The elder brother of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore and the wife of the country's first ICS officer Satyendranath Tagore, Jnanadanandini Devi, taught women to tie the pallu of the saree on the left shoulder." Satyendra Nath, the elder brother of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, was appointed as ICS officer in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Satyendranath's wife, Jnanadanandini Ji, lived in Ahmedabad. Local women tied pallu on the right shoulder, causing problems for women to work. Jnanadanandini Devi took the idea- why not take pallu on the left shoulder.
Pm Modi added, "Now I don't know exactly, but it is said that the pallu of the saree on the left shoulder is the gift of Jnanadanandini Devi. Organizations dealing with women empowerment should study this.
