New Delhi: PM Narendra Modi will dedicate the Kochi-Mangaluru natural gas pipeline to the nation through video conferencing today. This event will prove to be an important milestone towards the construction of 'One Nation One Gas Grid'. PM Modi has said that "it is a futuristic project that will positively affect many people".

PM Modi will inaugurate this at 11 am today. Karnataka Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Dharmendra Pradhan will also be present on the occasion along with Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala, CM BS Yeddyurappa, Kerala Governor Arif Mohammad Khan, and Kerala CM Pinarai Vijayan. According to information provided by PMO, the 450 km long pipeline has been developed by GAIL (India) Limited. It has a transport capacity of 12 million metric standard cubic meters per day and will carry natural gas from the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Regulation Terminal. The pipeline will pass from Kerala’s Kochi to Mangaluru in Karnataka’s Dakshina Kannada district passing through Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts and dedicate it to the nation virtually.

The project will cost a total of Rs 3000 crore and its construction has given employment to more than 12 lakhs. The laying of the pipeline was an engineering challenge as it was done through a special technique known as the horizontal directional drilling method. The pipeline will supply environmentally friendly and inexpensive fuel to the transport sector in the form of piped natural gas (PNG) to homes and compressed natural gas (CNG). It will also supply natural gas to commercial and industrial units in the districts along the pipeline. Consuming clean fuels will help improve air quality by curbing air pollution.
