New Delhi: The Cabinet meeting will be held on Monday under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The meeting will decide on amending two laws to give further powers to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). Once the NIA law is amended, the investigating agency will be able to investigate terrorist activities against Indian nationals and Indian interests abroad.

The amended law is likely to be tabled in Parliament this week after the Cabinet meeting. The amendment will also empower the NIA to investigate cyber crime and human trafficking cases. Also, an amendment to Schedule Four of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act will enable the NIA to declare a person suspected of having links with terrorism. So far, only organizations have been declared as 'terrorist organizations'.

Since 2017, the Union Home Ministry has been considering two laws to make the NIA more powerful. The NIA was formed in 2009 after the Mumbai terrorist attack. 166 people lost their lives in this traumatic event. The Union Home Ministry has long been considering two laws to give more strength to the NIA to deal with new challenges. It has the exclusive right to cybercrime and the right to declare someone as a terrorist, as the dangers are seen to rise rapidly.
