New Delhi: PM Modi will launch the Atal tunnel in Rohtang, Himachal Pradesh on Saturday. Due to this tunnel, the distance between Manali and Leh will be reduced to 46km. The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) has informed on Thursday that after the inaugural ceremony, Modi will attend a public event in the Sissu and Solang Valley of Lahaul Spiti.

PMO said "Atal tunnel is the longest highway tunnel in the world and the 9.02 long tunnel will connect Manali with Lahaul Spiti Valley throughout the year". He said the first valley was cut off from the rest due to heavy snowfall for six months. The tunnel is built at an altitude of about three thousand metres above sea level with sophisticated specifications between the mountain peaks of Pir Panjal in the Himalayas. The southern portal of Atal Tunnel is located at an altitude of 3060 metres at a distance of 25 km from Manali while the northern portal is located near Teling, Sissu village in Lahaul Valley at an altitude of 3071 metres.

The PMO informed that the two-lane tunnel with the size of horseshoe has an eight-metre wide road and a height of 5.525 metres. The Atal tunnel is designed for three thousand cars and 1500 trucks daily with a maximum speed of 80 kilometres per hour.
