NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, August 2, paid homage to the designer of the Indian National flag, Pingali Venkayya on his birth anniversary. The PM  said,  nation will forever be indebted to him for his efforts in giving citizens of the country 'the Tricolour'.

"On the occasion of his birthday, I pay homage to the legendary Pingali Venkayya. He made the sacrifices necessary to provide our country with the Tricolor, of which we are quite proud. May we continue to struggle for national growth while drawing courage and inspiration from the Tricolor, "PM Modi tweeted.

The Central government will issue a special commemorative postage stamp on Tuesday, August 2, to coincide with Pingali Venkayya's birth anniversary, who created India's national flag.

PM Modi would unveil the stamp at a ceremony in New Delhi on Sunday, G Kishan Reddy, Union Minister for Tourism and Culture said. He disclosed that the Pingali original flag will be on display at the occasion. Family members of Pingali have also been invited by the central government to the event.

In 2009, a postage stamp in his honour was release. Also, All India Radio's Vijayawada station was given his name in 2014. And last year, YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, the chief minister of Andhra Pradesh, put out his name for the Bharat Ratna.

Pingali, who was born on August 2, 1876, was a well-known national flag designer. He was born close to Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh. During the Vijayawada conference of the Indian National Congress, Mahatma Gandhi gave his approval to a design in 1921. He designed the national flag that is flown today.

The Indian national flag was created by ardent freedom warrior Venkayya, who later came to symbolise the spirit of a free and independent India. His final breath was taken on July 4, 1963.
