New Delhi: India  Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi toay, May 27, paid tributes to the former Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on his 59th death anniversary, being observed today.

On his death anniversary, PM Modi posted on Twitter, "I pay tribute to our former PM Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru."

Jawaharlal Nehru played a significant part in the fight for India's independence. He later went on to succeed as India's first Prime Minister following its 1947 independence.

Nehru was one of the primary figures in the Indian National Congress (INC), which led the fight to liberate India from British control. The first Prime Minister of India passed away on May 27, 1964. From 1947 to 1964, when he died at age 74, he served as prime minister. He loved children very much, and they used to nickname him Nehru Chacha
Every year in India, on November 14, the anniversary of Nehru's birth is also observed as Children's Day.
