CHENNAI: Dr. S. Ramadoss, the founder leader of the opposition Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), the political wing of the strong Vanniyar community, has asked that the Tamil Nadu government obtain Presidential approval for an exemption from the National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET) within three months.
The PMK leader stated in a statement on Friday that the government must take immediate action in this regard, citing Governor R.N. Ravi's recent submission to the President of a bill seeking exemption from NEET for students.
Except for the BJP, all major parties in Tamil Nadu have demanded an exemption, claiming that the NEET can only be passed by students who can afford private coaching. The PMK has been at the forefront of the argument that the NEET is causing a rural-urban gap among students and that medical education is becoming increasingly unavailable to students from poor rural backgrounds.
Dr. Ramadoss also stated that if the state government does not take fast action, the PMK will be forced to hold protest marches across the state and launch an agitation.
Meanwhile, the PMK's Youth wing chief has stated that the NEET exam for Postgraduate medical courses, which was slated for May 21, must be postponed for a few weeks. The students have requested that the NEET-PGA 2022 tests be postponed due to an excessive delay in the 2021 exam counselling procedure.
