New Delhi: The Minorities Commission has taken action in the matter of banning the sale of meat at several places in Delhi on the occasion of Navratri. The Delhi Minorities Commission has issued notices to the mayor and MCD commissioner of the three municipal corporations of the national capital. The notice asks the MCD mayor and the MCD commissioner under which rules they have issued orders/directions to ban meat shops during Navratras.

In fact, before Navratri, the mayor of South Delhi had issued an order regarding the meat ban. South Delhi Mayor Mukesh Suryan had directed the authorities concerned to take appropriate steps to keep meat shops closed till Navratri. He had said that during the days of Navratri, people visit the temple every day. In such a situation, it will not be right to open the meat shops coming in the way of the temple. He said it is also necessary to keep cleanliness around the temple.

The issue of the meat ban in Delhi was raised in Parliament. Trinamool Congress (TMC) Lok Sabha MP Mahua Moitra had said, "She lives in south Delhi and the Constitution allows her to eat meat whenever she wants. The matter was also voiced by National Conference leader Omar Abdullah.''
