NEW DELHI: In a speech to the parliamentary party on Tuesday, Congress interim President Sonia Gandhi said that the party's revival is essential for democracy and that the election results were "shocking" and "painful."
"Our dedication and determination, our spirit of resilience is under severe test," she stated in her speech. Unity at all levels of our enormous organization is essential, and I am committed to do everything it takes to ensure it. Our rebirth isn't only important to us; it's also important for our democracy and, by extension, for our society.
"I am well aware of your dissatisfaction with the recent election results. They've been stunning and hurtful at the same time. Our performance was reviewed by the Congress working committee (CWC) once. I've also had meetings with other colleagues. I've gotten a lot of ideas on how to improve our organisation. Many of them are important, and I'm working on them." She stated that presenting a roadmap was critical, and that a 'Shivir (meeting)' should be convened to do so.
"That is where a bigger number of colleagues and party representatives will have their voices heard. They will help to develop a clear roadmap for our party's urgent actions to address the difficulties we face," she said. She also stated that the road ahead would be more difficult than ever before.
The Congress was defeated in all five states that held elections in February and March, and did not receive favourable results, while the BJP repeated its winning performance in four states.
