The Puducherry or Pondicherry Assembly passed a vote on account for Rs 3,613.66 crore on Wednesday to cover the government's spending for the first five months of 2022, from April to August.

The bill was introduced in the house by Chief Minister N. Rangasamy, who also holds the finance ministry. In the house, it was approved by voice vote. The house was adjourned sine die after passing the vote on account.

For the months of April, May, June, July, and August, the bill permits payment and appropriation of Rs 4,385 crore, which includes Rs 3,613.66 crore voted by the assembly and Rs 771.34 crore charged out of the Union Territory of Puducherry's consolidated fund.

The Assembly also approved a supplementary demand for Rs 606.27 crore in funding for several departments for the fiscal year 2022-23. This includes Rs 432.54 crore voted by the assembly and Rs 173.73 crore charged on the Puducherry government's consolidated fund.

Meanwhile, opposition parties led by the DMK and the Congress staged a walkout from the legislature in protest of the government's failure to present a full budget. R. Siva of the DMK, the opposition leader, led the MLAs out of the house.

Both DMK and Congress members were on their feet shouting anti-government slogans and raising placards as soon as the parliament convened in the morning. The opposition leader said the vote on account was unacceptable and questioned why the administration was not presenting a full budget despite the fact that the allocation had been met during the Central budget.
