The Nitish Kumar government that is facing criticism over the liquor ban, has planned to introduce the Bihar Liquor Prohibition Bill 2022 in the state Assembly on Wednesday.

The modification makes it possible for first-time offenders to obtain bail from the duty magistrate after paying a fine. If the offender fails to pay the fee, he or she will be sentenced to one month in prison.

When an offender is apprehended by the police for violating the restriction, the accused is required to reveal the name of the person from whom the liquor was received.

The Nitish Kumar government wants the Bill to move smoothly through the Vidhan Sabha, thus copies of the amending Bill have been distributed to all MLAs for them to peruse.

The Bihar Prohibition and Excise Act, enacted by the state's chief minister in April 2016, established a liquor ban in the state. Following the ban, a considerable number of people have been imprisoned only for consuming alcoholic beverages. The majority of those who violate the law are from the poorer areas of society. Even bail hearings in uncomplicated situations might take a year in the courts.

Last year, Chief Justice of India N.V. Ramana stated that rulings such as the Bihar government's liquor prohibition in 2016 have placed a significant load on the courts. "In the courts, there are three lakh cases outstanding. People have been waiting for justice for a long time, and now the high number of cases involving liquor breaches is adding to the court's workload "The Chief Justice of the International Court of Justice  has stated.
