New Delhi: India's population growth may record a decline for the first time in 2024. However, despite this, India will remain among the youngest countries in the world. According to the report, the census may begin in 2024, which will be completed by 2025. This is the first time that the census scheduled for 2021 was postponed, while the census has been conducted regularly since 1872.
Population growth status: The SBI report states that India's population was 361 million in 1951, growing at a rate of 1.25%. In 1971, the rate was 2.22%, taking the population to 548 million. In 2021, the population is expected to grow at a rate of 1% to 1.20% to between 138 and 142 million. On a regional basis, North India has seen the highest population growth, witnessing a 29% increase. In contrast, South India grew by a mere 12%.
Decreasing number of children: The number of children between the ages of zero and 14 has also declined. Their number was 31.2 crores in 1991, which may decline to 34 crores by 2024. Their share in the total population was 37% in 1991, which may come down to 24.3% by 2024. At the same time, the population above 60 years of age is constantly increasing and it may reach 15 crores by 2024.
Increase in working population: According to the report, the working population of 15 to 59 years is increasing rapidly. This number was 46.5 crores in 1991, which can reach 91 crores by 2024. Its share in the total population is estimated to be 67%, and by 2030 this figure can reach 100 crores.
Expansion of urban population: According to the 2011 census, the urban population has increased fourfold. In 2011, 31% of people lived in cities, which may increase to 35.37% by 2024. Tamil Nadu has the highest number of people living in cities at 54%, while Maharashtra has 48.8% people living in urban areas. At the same time, Himachal Pradesh and Bihar have the lowest urban population, where only 10.3% and 12.4% people live in cities.
Increasing number of elderly: The report states that Uttar Pradesh has the highest elderly population at 1.9 crore. This figure is 1.5 crore in Maharashtra and 1.1 crore in West Bengal. 20 lakh elderly people live in Delhi, while 24% of the people of Uttar Pradesh live in urban areas.
