NEW DELHI: In a major move aimed at reflecting India's historical legacy, Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced on Friday that Port Blair will be renamed 'Shri Vijayapuram.' This decision is part of the government's effort to "remove symbols of colonial history" from the country.
Amit Shah announced the change via a post on X, saying, "The Home Ministry has decided to rename Port Blair as 'Shri Vijayapuram'. This new name embodies our fight for freedom and acknowledges the role of Andaman and Nicobar in that struggle."
Highlighting the island's importance, Shah noted its unique place in India's independence movement and history. He mentioned that the island, once a naval base during the Chola Empire, is now poised to enhance the country's security and development.
Shah also spoke about the Cellular Jail, a significant historical site where many freedom fighters were imprisoned. "This island is where Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose first hoisted the tricolour and where Veer Savarkar and other patriots fought for India's independence," he added.
Amit Shah also emphasized the historic importance of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, stating, "The Andaman & Nicobar Islands hold a unique place in our freedom struggle and history. Once a naval base for the Chola Empire, these islands are now set to play a crucial role in our strategic and developmental goals."This is the very place where Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose first unfurled our national flag, and where the Cellular Jail witnessed the struggles of Veer Savarkar and other freedom fighters for our nation's independence."
Shah also noted that Sri Vijayapuram will serve as the capital city of the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
