BANGALORE: Beginning in the academic year 2022-23, the Karnataka government made uniforms mandatory for Pre-University Course(PUC) students from the academic year 2022-23. The directives are part of the guidelines provided to PUC students. According to sources, the ruling BJP made the decision in anticipation of a hijab problem once PU classes resume.
The SSLC (Class 10) results were released on Thursday in the state, and PU college admissions will commence on Friday.
Uniforms were not required in the Education Department's standards for the 2020-21 school year. According to Education Department sources, the new rule will allow college administrators to adopt a hijab ban in classrooms.
The government's decision has been questioned by a number of parents and students. However, the Special Bench of the Karnataka High Court, which heard the case and upheld the government order, declared that students must wear uniforms.
The court also dismissed a petition contesting the uniform policy and requesting the ability to wear the hijab in class. The petitioners have taken their case to the Supreme Court.
The instructions said that uniforms established by the School Development and Management Committee (SDMC) are mandatory for PUC students, leaving no room for interpretation. The revised circular noted that if the SDMC does not mandate a uniform, students should wear a garment that promotes equality and solidarity while also ensuring that it does not disrupt public order.
