Hyerabad: The state of Telangana may face an energy crisis as the coal reserves are only for the next one week. Officials said the thermal units in the state with an installed capacity of over 3000 MW require around 50,000 tonnes of coal every day. Top officials of Telangana Genco said that the available coal reserves will meet the requirement of thermal projects only for a week. Officials said the Union Power Ministry for the second day indicated that they may have to move coal produced from Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) to other states to meet the demand of coal for thermal power generation in the next three or four days. Is.
As coal is diverted from SCCL, Telangana thermal power units will face severe coal shortage from next week. “At present, the state depends on coal generated by SCCL and a captive mine located at Tadicherla in Bhupalpally district,” officials said, adding that around 60 per cent of the state’s energy needs are met by these thermal units only. If the coal crisis deepens, the state will have to rely on the National Electricity Exchange and buy power from other states.
The State Energy Officers are closely monitoring the supply and demand of coal across the country and its availability to ensure adequate supply of fossil fuels in times of emergency in case the supply of coal from SCCL is stopped. He said that the state would also request the Union Power Ministry to provide local coal to the thermal units of the state.
