Story of Pradosh Vrat - In ancient times there used to be a poor priest. After the death of the priest, his widowed wife used to come back home by evening after begging with her son. One day she met the prince of the country of Vidarbha, who started wandering after the death of his father. She took the prince with her to her house and started keeping her as a son. One day the wife of the priest took both her sons with her to the ashram of the sage Shandilya. There she heard the story and method of Lord Shiva's Pradosha fast from the sage and then she also started Pradosha fast. Once both boys were roaming in the forest. The son of the priest returned home, but the prince remained in the forest.

When that prince saw the Gandharva girls playing, he started talking to them. That girl's name was Anshumati. The prince returned home late that day. The prince reached the same place again on the second day, where Anshumati was talking to her parents. Then Anshumati's parents recognized that prince and told him that you are a prince of Vidarbha city, your name is Dharmagupta. Anshumati's parents liked that prince and said that we want to marry our daughter to you, are you ready for this marriage? When the prince gave his approval, both of them got married. Later, the prince attacked Vidarbha with a huge army of Gandharvas and won the fierce battle and reigned with his wife. In that palace, he brought the priest's wife and son with respect and started living with them.

All the sorrows and poorness of the wife and son of the priest overcame and they started living their lives with happiness. One day Anshumati asked the prince the reason behind all these things, then the prince told Anshumati the whole thing of his life and also made her aware of the importance of Pradosh Vrat and the fruits derived from the fast. From that day, the prestige and importance of Pradosh fast increased and people started doing this fast.
