According to sources, Badal became the Chief Minister of the state for the first time in 1970. He then served as the Chief Minister of the state in 1977, then in 1997, then in 2007. During this time he was also appointed as the Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation. He had led the Akali movement during the Emergency.
