Preneet Kaur was born on October 3, 1944. She is an Indian politician who served as Minister of State in the Ministry of External Affairs in the Government of India from 2009 to 2014. She is amarinder Singh's wife, who is now the 26th Chief Minister of Punjab. She joined the Congress party, which also has her husband, and contested the parliamentary elections from Patiala constituency. She won the 1999, 2004 and 2009 elections, but lost her seat in the 2014 elections and Dr Dharamveer Gandhi won the election who belonged to Aam Aadmi Party.

Preneet Kaur was born in a Jat Sikh family in Shimla, India. She is the daughter of Sardar Giani Singh, an officer in the Indian Civil Service, and Sadinder Kaur. In 1937, He entered the Indian Civil Service when it was very rare for an Indian to enter that distinguished administrative service. He served on several senior posts including the Chief Secretary of Punjab in the decade 1960. He passed away in December 2002. Praneet Kaur's works for the United Nations, and a sister who is married to a politician and former IPS officer Simanjit Singh Mann.

Preneet Kaur attended St. Bede College, Shimla, and graduated from Shimla. In October 1964, Preneet Kaur was married to Captain Amarinder Singh. Her husband is the son and successor of the Pheasant Maharaja of Patiala, who was previously the ruler of Punjab. Amarinder Singh, who was serving as an officer in the Indian Army at the time of his marriage, succeeded his father as the Maharaja of Patiala in 1974, where Praneet Kaur became the Empress of Patiala.

After resigning from the army, Amarinder Singh followed in his father's footsteps and entered politics, where he got great success. He was elected to Parliament from Patiala constituency in 1980, and served for many years as minister in the State Government in the Punjab State Legislative Assembly in 1985, 1992 and 2002. In 2002, he took over as chief minister of Punjab for the first time and completed a five-year term till 2007. In March 2017, he again won the state assembly elections and again took office as chief minister for the second time.
