In the battle of having the reign in the StateThe opposition party, Congress announced a pre-poll alliance with four Left parties and the Janata Dal-Secular on Thursday, ahead of the Manipur Assembly election (JD-S). Nameirakpam Loken Singh, the president of the Manipur Pradesh Congress, stated that the six parties will fight the elections jointly and that they were certain of beating the incumbent BJP.

In contrary to the BJP-led alliance in Manipur, Congress Legislature Party leader Okram Ibobi Singh, who served as Chief Minister for a record 15 years (2002-17), assured the media that the 6-party alliance will have a shared minimum programme. According to the six parties' current understanding, the CPI would only nominate a candidate in the Khurai constituency, while the Congress will field candidates in the majority of the other seats.

However, because both the Congress and the CPI have already declared candidates for the Kakching Assembly constituency, the parties will battle it out in a peaceful manner.

The CPI had announced two candidates, while the Congress released its initial list of 40 candidates on Saturday. The Congress ticket also included Ibobi Singh, his son Surjakumar Okram, Loken Singh, past Congress presidents Gaikhangam and TN Haokip, and 11 serving MLAs.

The BJP has yet to name its candidates, but its ally, the National People's Party (NPP), released the first list of 20 candidates on Monday. With the support of four NPP MLAs, four Naga People's Front (NPF) members, the lone Trinamool Congress MLA, and an Independent member, the BJP, which had won 21 seats in 2017, was able to form a coalition government for the first time. Despite being the single-largest party with 28 members, Congress was removed from power in 2017 after 15 years in power.

On February 27 and March 3, elections for the 60-member Manipur Assembly will be held in two parts, with the votes being counted on March 10.
