MUMBAI: To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Maharashtra Legislative Council (MLC), President of India Droupadi Murmu will unveil a new book titled "Necessity and Importance of Upper House" on July 29. The launch event will take place at the state legislature’s Central Hall.

During the ceremony, select members from both the Legislative Assembly and the Legislative Council will be recognized with the “Outstanding Parliamentarian" and “Outstanding Speech" awards, presented by President Murmu.

"The period from 1921 to 2021 marks the centenary march of the MLC," explained Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar. "This series includes four books. The first addresses the necessity and importance of the upper house, followed by volumes on important bills, resolutions, and policies passed by the Legislative Council, key discussions on various topics, and a collection titled '100 years and 100 speeches.' These books will serve as valuable reference materials for readers on these diverse subjects."

The initial meeting of the "Bombay Legislative Council" under the Government of India Act, 1919, based on the Montague-Chelmsford Commission's recommendations, took place on February 19, 1921, at Town Hall. A notable moment from this event was the appointment of Narayan Ganesh Chandavarkar as the Speaker of the Legislative Council.
