BHUBANESWAR: President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday called on agricultural scientists to develop and share technologies promptly to address challenges like natural disasters, climate change, and the overuse of resources. She made these remarks while speaking at the 40th convocation of the Odisha University of Agricultural and Technology (OUAT).
President Murmu emphasized the need for solutions to protect the environment, soil, and water from the harmful effects of climate change. She said, "Agriculture is facing numerous challenges, including natural disasters, climate change, smaller farm sizes, and overuse of natural resources. Our scientists need to create and spread technologies quickly to address these issues. It's crucial to focus on environmental protection, soil health, water conservation, and the efficient use of resources."
She also noted that climate-related problems, such as rising temperatures and increased greenhouse gases, are impacting agricultural production across India. "Agricultural scientists have a vital role in tackling these issues," Murmu said. She also highlighted the growing problem of excessive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, which negatively affect the soil, water, and environment.
“The impact of fertilizers and pesticides on the environment is a growing concern. I am confident that young scientists will find solutions to these challenges,” the President said.
Despite these challenges, Murmu expressed satisfaction with the remarkable progress India has made in agricultural production and the export of farm products in recent years. "This success is thanks to the guidance of our agricultural scientists and the hard work of our farmers," she said.
The President also emphasized that strengthening agriculture, fisheries, and livestock could play a key role in boosting India’s economy. She encouraged the students to contribute to making India a developed nation by 2047 with their innovative ideas and dedication.
