New Delhi: On Friday, President Ram Nath Kovind appealed to the citizens of India to come out and exercise their voting rights in the upcoming general elections that will be held in April-May this year. While Addressing the nation on Republic Day eve, President Kovind said, “Republic Day is an opportunity for all citizens of the country to remember independence, equality and brotherhood.”

On Friday in a public broadcast evening, he said, “This year, the citizens of India will get a chance to fulfil an important responsibility. All of us have to use our voting rights in coming general elections for 17th Lok Sabha. This election will be special as 21st century born voters will vote for the first time.”

Remembering the Father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi, President said in his address that , “This Independence Day is special. On October 2, we will mark the 150th birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, who led us – and who inspired oppressed societies in Asia, Africa and elsewhere – to freedom from colonial rule. Gandhiji remains the moral compass of our Republic; his teachings are still the touchstone to measure our policies and initiatives. His 150th anniversary is not for India alone; it is a joy to be shared with the world,” President said in his address.

Today, India celebrates its 70th Republic Day.
