New Delhi: President of India Ramnath Kovind has nominated former Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi to Rajya Sabha. The Central Government nominated former Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi to the Rajya Sabha and the notification to this effect has been implemented by the Ministry of Home Affairs on Monday, 16 March 2020. According to the notification issued, the President nominated Ranjan Gogoi on the seat vacated by the retirement of one of the nominated members of Rajya Sabha. We do.' This seat is vacant due to the retirement of KTS Tulsi.

For the information, let us tell that Gogoi was the chairman of that 5-member bench of the Supreme Court, which ruled the sensitive Ayodhya dispute on November 9 last year. After which he retired the same month. This was the second-longest hearing in history. He also presided over the benches of the Supreme Court which had given pronouncements on issues like the entry of women in the Sabarimala temple and the Rafale fighter jet deal. At the same time, it is being said that out of the 25 judges sitting in the Supreme Court, Gogoi was among the 11 judges who gave details of their assets on the court website.

Katju had to appear in the top court: According to information received from sources, the second historical event of Gogoi's tenure is on 11 December 2016. In this, a bench headed by Justice Ranjan Gogoi summoned retired Supreme Court Justice Markaday Katju to the court for commenting in the blog on the Kerala's famous Soumya murder case. This was the first time in the history of the country that a retired justice has appeared in the Supreme Court and has debated. Not only this, after the debate, the top court should issue a notice of contempt to him. A bench headed by Justice Gogoi issued a contempt notice to Katju, saying that the comments made on the blog were prima facie contemptible.
