President Ram Nath Kovind awarded the "President's Colour" to the Indian Naval Ship (INS) Valsura at Jamnagar, Gujarat, on Friday.

The "President's Colour" is awarded to any military unit in honour of outstanding service to the country, both in peace and conflict. A ceremonial march with a 150-man Guard of Honour was presented to the President to commemorate the event.

On May 27, 1951, Dr Rajendra Prasad, the then-President of India, presented the President's Colour to the Indian Navy, which was the first branch of the Indian Armed Forces to receive it.

INS Valsura, a flagship training institution of the Indian Navy, was established in 1942 with the mission of providing Electrical, Electronics, Weapon Systems, and Information Technology instruction to officers and sailors of the Indian Navy, Coast Guard, and Friendly Foreign Countries.  "For nearly 80 years, the INS Valsura has distinguished itself with outstanding and valiant service to the nation," the Navy said in a statement.
