New Delhi: President Ram Nath Kovind expressed his sorrow on Wednesday over the electrocution of 11 people during a chariot parade in Tamil Nadu's Thanjavur's Appar Swami Temple, calling it a "tragedy beyond words."
"The electrocution of people, including children, during a procession in Thanjavur is a tragedy beyond words. My heartfelt sympathies go out to the bereaved families. I wish the injured person a swift recovery "India's President sent out a tweet.
A temple car, which was part of an annual chariot procession of Appar Swami Temple in Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu, collided with a high voltage overhead line in Kalimedu village. In connection with the deaths caused by electrocution during the chariot parade in Tamil Nadu today, an FIR has been filed and an inquiry has begun.
"Eleven persons have reportedly died in total. Three people died on the spot, while the other seven died later in the hospital. 15 persons have been hurt and are being treated at Thanjavur Medical College. An FIR has been lodged, and an investigation has begun into the case "Tiruchi Range Inspector General of Police V. Balakrishnan stated.
Following the catastrophe, Prime Minister Modi offered an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh for the next of kin of those who died in the Thanjavur accident and Rs 50,000 for those who were injured. In the meantime, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has promised a Rs 5 lakh compensation for the families of those killed in the Thanjavur accident.
