CHENNAI: On June 3, former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi's birth anniversary, the Tamil Nadu government would unveil a statue of him at Omandurar Government Estate in Chennai, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin stated in the Assembly on Tuesday.

He stated the government would commemorate the late DMK leader's birth anniversary as a government function every year in a suo motu announcement.

Stalin said it was the obligation of the Tamil Nadu government to honour the late DMK patriarch for going the extra mile for the "betterment of the Tamil race" in the second statement issued under Karunanidhi's government after the cabinet led by him took charge on May 7, 2021.

CM Stalin emphasised that the previous Chief Minister had never lost in any of the elections in which he had contested, and he recalled his services to the welfare of Tamils and Tamil Nadu.

Duraimurugan, a senior DMK leader and Minister, congratulated the Chief Minister for the announcement and recalled how Karunanidhi was known for his generous gestures even to Opposition leaders.  Except for the AIADMK, all political leaders applauded the announcement.
