CHENNAI: Police in Selaiyur, Chennai, have commenced an investigation into an allegation that his wife was requested to remove her hijab when they went to a school to look for a seat for their four-year-old boy.
According to Ashiq Meeran of Tambaram's complaint, he and his wife went to a private school in East Tambaram to enrol their son in the LKG class. He said that a school official demanded his wife to take off her hijab, saying that wearing it on school grounds is prohibited.
The couple then reported to the principal about the incident. According to the complaint and his wife, the principal was supportive of the employee's stance and informed the pair that the school does not allow women to wear hijab on its premises, said a station house officer from Selayiur police station.
Meeran and his wife left the school and filed a complaint with the Selayiur police, along with other family members and relatives. According to a police officer, they will meet with the school principal to get a reaction to the complaint, as well as speak with other teachers and staff members at the school.
Even while neighbouring Karnataka grappled with the issue, Tamil Nadu was free of it, and the state government and political parties were angered by the school administrators' actions.
