A 63-year-old traditional priest in Ghana caused a stir by marrying a 12-year-old girl. Some people think this is wrong, but some local leaders say it's part of their old customs.

The priest, whose name is Nuumo Borketey Laweh Tsuru XXXIII, had a special ceremony on Saturday to marry the girl. In Ghana, the legal age to get married is 18, and less child marriage happens now than before, but it still occurs.

Leaders in the priest's community say the marriage follows their traditions. They say the girl began preparing to be the priest's wife 6 years ago, and she could still go to school.

Ghana's laws allow traditional marriages, but they don't allow child marriage, even if it's called a tradition.  Almost 1 in 5 girls in Ghana are married before 18, and some are even married before 15!

Videos of the wedding show people telling the girl to get ready to be a wife and use perfume to seem more attractive to her husband. There are also reports that the girl will have another ceremony to prepare her for having children and other wifely duties.

Who is Tsuru?

Tsuru is a very important person in his community. He's called a "Gborbu Wulomo," which means the main traditional priest. He's like a spiritual leader and takes care of important things for the community, like prayers and ceremonies.
