New Delhi: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Indonesia on September 6-7 to participate in the ASEAN-India and East Asia Summits, with the primary goal of strengthening India's trade and security partnerships with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

The visit to Jakarta, Indonesia, is a result of an invitation extended by Indonesian President Joko Widodo, who currently presides over ASEAN. These significant meetings are scheduled just before India takes the helm as the host of the G20 Summit in New Delhi on September 9-10. The ASEAN-India Summit holds particular importance, as it marks the first such meeting since the elevation of India-ASEAN relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2022. This summit will provide an opportunity to assess the progress of India-ASEAN relations and outline the future direction of cooperation.

The East Asia Summit will serve as a platform for leaders from ASEAN nations and the eight dialogue partners, including India, to engage in discussions about regional and global issues. India's Indo-Pacific policy places ASEAN at the heart of its strategic approach, and India has substantial trade and investment links with key ASEAN members, particularly Singapore. Previously, there was speculation about the possibility of talks between Prime Minister Modi and China's leadership on the sidelines of the ASEAN-related meetings. However, it has been confirmed that President Xi Jinping will not attend the meetings in Jakarta. Instead, Premier Li Qiang will lead the Chinese delegation, and he is also expected to head the delegation at the upcoming G20 Summit in New Delhi next week.
