New Delhi: On the anniversary of the socialist icon Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia's birth, Prime Minister Narendra paid tribute to him.

PM Modi said on Twitter, "On the occasion of Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia's birth anniversary, we remember him. He was at the forefront of many historical events and was instrumental in our fight for independence. His uncompromising politics and intellectual skills have earned him widespread acclaim." "Some interesting nuggets from the pages of history," he said, "a letter from Dr. Lohia to Lord Linlithgow, and communication between Dr. Lohia's father and him."

The Samajwadi Party  announced on Sunday that it will commemorate Dr Ram Manohar Lohia's 112th birthday on March 23.

Lohia was a socialist political leader and an activist in the Indian Independence Movement.  He was a member of both the Praja and the Samyukta Socialist Parties. In 1962, Lohia ran for the seat of Phulpur against former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, but he lost. In 1963, he won a by-election and was elected as the Member of Parliament for Farukkhabad. He went on to win the Kannauj constituency election in 1967.
