New Delhi, December 5: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, along with Members of Parliament from Kerala, met Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday to press for immediate assistance for the victims of the landslides in Wayanad.
Priyanka, who represents Wayanad as an MP, called for urgent aid to help the affected families, rebuild their homes, and restore the essential infrastructure. She urged that the disaster be treated as a humanitarian issue, without any political bias, and asked the Centre to release the necessary funds for rehabilitation as quickly as possible.
She said the landslide had devastated a large area, with many lives lost and entire families wiped out. "We have already appealed to both the Prime Minister and the Home Minister. The destruction in Wayanad is total. People there have lost everything. If the Centre does not step in to help, it will send a very negative message across the country, especially to the victims," Priyanka told reporters.
She added, "The Prime Minister had visited the region and met with the victims. When I later spoke to the people, they still held on to the hope of getting relief. But four months have passed, and no help has arrived. I appealed to the Home Minister, and he listened with empathy. I urged him to rise above politics and truly understand the suffering of the people. As Kerala MPs, we have requested the Centre to take this matter seriously."
The Congress leader also shared that the Home Minister promised to provide details on the steps already taken and any further actions that could be taken to help the affected people.
Earlier this year, Wayanad was struck by devastating landslides, which led to significant destruction. State estimates suggest that 359 people have either died or gone missing due to the disaster.
