New Delhi: Congress President Rahul Gandhi’s sister and also Congress general secretary (UP East) Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said her party can defeat the BJP in Uttar Pradesh on its own. Priyanka said the that goal of Congress, as well as other political parties, is same and that is to defeat BJP in upcoming Loksabha election 2019.

Priyanka  said, “We're fighting the elections alone, we have no issues with anyone, don't want to disturb anyone, our goal is to defeat BJP, their goal also is to defeat BJP,"

The Congress general secretary’s  response comes after her party's announcement on Sunday that it won't field candidates from seven constituencies where key leaders of BSP, SP and RLD will be contesting for the Lok Sabha elections 2019.

The SP-BSP-RLD alliance had earlier announced that it will not field candidates from the Congress bastions of Rae Bareli and Amethi in order to give the party more space to deal with the BJP in other seats.

Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee chief Raj Babbar on Sunday said the Congress  will not contest in Mainpuri, where SP patriarch Mulayam Singh will contest, Kannauj, where Akhilesh Yadav's wife Dimple Yadav is expected to run, Firozabad, where Akhilesh's cousin Akshay Yadav might fight, and the seats from where BSP chief Mayawati, RLD chief Ajit Singh, his son Jayant would decide to contest.

Congress might also leave Azamgarh, where Akhilesh Yadav will reportedly contest.  Both Mayawati and Akhilesh snubbed the Congress on its offer, saying it is free to contest candidates from wherever it sees fit.
