New Delhi: Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Congress leader and daughter of Sonia Gandhi, was sworn in as a Member of Parliament (MP) on Thursday after her significant win in Kerala's Wayanad by-election.

The 52-year-old took the oath in Hindi, holding a copy of the Constitution, as the Parliament convened. Her victory is notable as it marks a rare instance of a family trio—Sonia, Rahul, and Priyanka—serving together in Parliament.

Alongside her, Ravindra Chavan of Congress, who won the Nanded bypoll, also took his oath in Marathi, dedicating it to God. This by-election was called after the passing of his father, Vasantrao Chavan.

Priyanka Gandhi entered active politics in 2019 and was appointed Congress General Secretary. Her Wayanad win marks her first term as an elected representative, five years after she began her political journey. She secured an impressive victory margin of over 4.1 lakh votes, surpassing the tally of her brother, Rahul Gandhi, from the same constituency.

Priyanka’s entry into Parliament comes at a challenging time for the Congress Party, which has faced setbacks in recent state elections in Haryana and Maharashtra. Her leadership and influence will be closely watched as she seeks to revitalize the party's fortunes.

Known for her resemblance to her grandmother, former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, Priyanka has long been a key campaigner for the Congress, playing an important role in her mother and brother's political campaigns.

On Wednesday, Congress leaders from Wayanad presented Priyanka with her election certificate and extended their warm wishes for her new journey. Priyanka’s decisive victory in the Wayanad bypoll, where she defeated Sathyan Mokeri of the CPI(M)-led LDF, has made a strong statement about her political future.
