NEW DELHI: Congresswoman Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is likely to join party president Mallikarjun Kharge's new team as election manager after successfully leading the party to victory in the 2022 Himachal Pradesh Assembly elections.
During discussions with political consultant Prashant Kishor, the notion of forming an election management team was raised. It was implied that PK might be selected for the coveted position, but nothing came of it. Sources said Priyanka Gandhi denied such a move saying it's entirely the call of the party president.
Priyanka Gandhi is the general secretary in charge of the state of Uttar Pradesh, where the party only has one MP and two MLAs and the general election of 2024 poses the biggest challenge.
All states will have representation on the Congress Working Committee (CWC), with no state receiving a disproportionate amount. Delhi, Kerala, Rajasthan, and Karnataka held a significant portion of the party in the previous prolonged CWC.
Major elections will be held this year for the Congress, including those in Karnataka (May) and the state elections in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Chhattisgarh.
The party president was given permission to form the CWC after the steering committee of the Congress in Raipur opted against holding elections for it.
Party's GenSec in-charge Communications, Jairam Ramesh had said, "Unanimous decision was taken to authorise Congress president to formulate the new Congress Working Committee." The Congress has decided to give 50% reservation for SC/ST, Other Backward Classes, Minorities, and Women.
