Progress Update: Uttarakhand's Uniform Civil Code Committee Nears Draft Completion

Dehradun: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced that the committee tasked with preparing the draft of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state is nearing completion of its work and will soon present the draft. Addressing a farmers' function at the chief minister's residence, Dhami mentioned that the UCC committee has almost finished its tasks, with the draft currently being typed in both English and Hindi. The Chief Minister had previously extended the tenure of the expert committee by another 15 days to allow for the compilation and completion of certain formalities.

The UCC committee, led by Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, has seen multiple extensions, the latest being a four-month extension granted in September of the previous year. The committee, formed on May 27, 2022, is on its fourth extension and has been working on preparing a draft after considering public suggestions. Despite the progress, the final report has not yet been submitted to the government. The UCC was a promised initiative during the run-up to the 2022 assembly polls in Uttarakhand, aiming to establish a common set of laws dealing with marriage, inheritance, adoption, and other related matters.

Article 44 of the Constitution of India advocates for a Uniform Civil Code throughout the country. The UCC gained prominence in June of the previous year when Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the need for its implementation, asserting that the country cannot function with two sets of laws. PM Modi underscored that the UCC aligns with the constitutional principles and ideals, dismissing opposition accusations of playing vote bank politics. The debate over the UCC has been a contentious issue, with varying opinions and discussions surrounding its potential implementation.
