Puducherry: Setting an example in campus greening initiatives, Tagore Government Arts and Science College, one of the leading colleges in Puducherry, has transformed 13 acres of land inside the campus into a lush green reserve.

Located in an elevated part of the city in Lawspet, the Tagore Arts and Science has converted about 13 acres of once barren land into lush green reserve. In fact, the bio-diverse surroundings that house over 3,000 varieties of flowering plants and fruit-bearing trees, has even reported peacock sightings in recent times. The college was established in 1961 in Lawspet and is affiliated with Pondicherry University, a Central University under the Ministry of Education, Government of India. It offers courses in various disciplines of art, commerce, and science.

The flora features hibiscus, bougainvillea and jasmine, peepal, neem, banyan, mango, fig, casuarinas and even cannonball trees. The campus has also grown into a natural habitat for birds including owls, sparrows, kingfishers, cuckoos and woodpeckers. Sasi Kanta Dash, Principal of Tagore Government Arts and Science College, stressed on the importance of the environment for education and said a vegetable garden has also been maintained on the campus.
