Pune's Mahatma Gandhi Smarak Samiti has taken the matter to the Bombay High Court concerning Sambhaji Bhide's alleged derogatory remarks against Mahatma Gandhi. The uproar started when a leaked audio clip of Bhide's statement went viral.

On August 3, 2023, three members of the Samiti, namely Kumar Saptarshi, Anwar Rajan, and Sandip Barve, filed a petition on behalf of the organization in the High Court.

Addressing the issue, Saptarshi said, "We are seeking the court's guidance in establishing the boundaries between freedom of speech and protection of historical figures' reputation. In this age of social media, unreasonable opinions are being spread widely, but we must maintain the dignity and respect of historical personalities."

The Mahatma Gandhi Smarak Samiti highlighted that Bhide has consistently made cynical claims and attempted to propagate false history in society.

An FIR has been lodged against Bhide by the Navi Mumbai police following a complaint regarding his derogatory comments against Gautam Buddha and social reformers Jyotiba Phule and Periyar Naicker, according to an official statement on Monday.

Just last month, an FIR was filed in Amravati against Bhide for allegedly making offensive remarks about Mahatma Gandhi's lineage during one of his speeches, the police stated earlier.

Facing demands from opposition parties for action against Bhide due to his derogatory remarks against Mahatma Gandhi, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis asserted last week that insults towards national icons would not be tolerated.

In the most recent incident, advocate Amit Katarnavre, a resident of Panvel in Navi Mumbai, lodged a complaint at the New Panvel police station, alleging that Bhide made derogatory comments against Gautam Buddha, Jyotiba Phule, and Periyar Naicker, which deeply hurt the sentiments of those who hold them in high reverence.
