Chandigarh: The Punjab government, led by Bhagwant Mann, is scheduled to make an announcement on Saturday providing financial assistance to the state's transporters, source said.

Sources added that the Punjab government is going to provide some financial relief to cab and auto drivers. The private carriers, who have met with the new Aam Aadmi Party-led government multiple times, have demanded that the Rs 2.54 per km Motor Vehicle Tax (MVT) be cut.

During the recently ended Punjab Assembly elections, the issues of transporters was also addressed. If his party is voted to power after the 2022 state Assembly elections, AAP national convenor and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has promised to terminate the Punjab transport mafia and tackle all transport-related concerns.

"I've come to see you as a brother, not as a politician. It would be a stroke of luck for me if I could fix your problems and rescue your job. You'll never need to hold another dharna again," Kejriwal said.

He had also promised to set up a transportation commission. "For the transport industry in Punjab, a panel of 10 to 15 members will be formed, with representatives from the state's transporter unions. This commission, not commanders and ministers sitting in air-conditioned chambers, will draught the new transportation policy "he said.
