Amritsar: The Punjab government led by Bhagwant Mann has given a green signal to the new excise policy. In the Punjab cabinet meeting on Wednesday (8 June 2022), the quota of English liquor and beer has been abolished, i.e. now companies can make as much liquor as they want. Due to this, the prices of liquor in Punjab can come down by 30 to 40 percent.

According to reports, a target of Rs 9,647.85 crore was fixed in the meeting under the new excise policy. The new policy is expected to generate 40 percent more revenue than last year. Under the new excise policy, beer and foreign liquor manufactured in the country will be made cheaper. Last year this quota was 4.80 crore bottles. Similarly, there will be no quota of beer. Last year, 3.28 crore bottles of beer were sold. The quota of country liquor will remain 6.30 crore proof liters. The AAP government of the state claims that due to the low price of liquor, there will be no smuggling from neighbouring states.

It is being told that the Punjab government has reduced the excise duty on English liquor from 350 percent to 150 percent. Along with this, it has been reduced from 250 to one percent on country liquor. With this, the price of liquor in Punjab will now be at par with the neighbouring states. A spokesperson of the Chief Minister's Office said that this policy will be effective for 9 months from July 1, 2022 to March 31, 2023. The AAP government of Delhi has also made liquor cheaper under the new excise policy and now the same work is going to be considered as God.

Explain that under the new excise policy, the allotment of contracts will be done through e-tendering. To make the system fair and transparent, liquor contracts have been divided into 177 groups. The turnover of a group will be around 30 crores and there will be 6378 contracts in Punjab. Excise duty on all types of liquor except PML will be charged at the rate of one percent of the wholesale price.
