Chandigarh: Following his party's defeat in the assembly elections, Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi submitted his resignation to Governor Banwarilal Purohit on Friday.

The Channi-led cabinet, at its final meeting, suggested that the assembly be dissolved, opening the way for the formation of a new Aam Aadmi Party-led legislature.

"I have tendered my resignation to the governor," Channi told reporters a day after the results, after going to the Raj Bhawan to hand over his resignation letter to the governor.

The Congress was trounced in the polls, with the AAP winning 92 of the 117 seats in the legislature, leaving the Congress with only 18 members. The SAD-BSP combination was also crushed by the AAP sweep. The Shiromani Akali Dal received three seats, the BJP received two, and the BSP received one. Several stalwarts were defeated, including Channi, Parkash Singh Badal, and Amarinder Singh. Channi was defeated in both of the seats he ran for. With 37,558 votes from Bhadaur, he was defeated by Labh Singh Ugoke of the AAP. He also lost his seat in Chamkaur Sahib, when he was defeated by AAP candidate Charanjit Singh by 7,942 votes.
